About the Research Triangle Park Great Pyrenees Club

The idea for a regional Great Pyrenees club serving North Carolina had been discussed as early as 2010 by fanciers who recognized the need for a local organization dedicated to the breed. By 2013, those conversations had gained momentum, and a small group of three enthusiasts began researching what it would take to establish a new regional club.

Their vision was clear: create a club that would support the Great Pyrenees community throughout North Carolina and the surrounding region, become an affiliate of the Great Pyrenees Club of America (GPCA), and ultimately qualify for licensed status with the American Kennel Club (AKC). Working closely with the AKC, the GPCA, and leaders from established regional clubs, they spent months developing the framework needed to achieve those goals.

Once the groundwork was in place, the group began reaching out to Great Pyrenees owners, breeders, exhibitors, and enthusiasts throughout the region. Forty-four individuals were contacted, laying the foundation for what would soon become a thriving club.

On March 20, 2014, the Research Triangle Park Great Pyrenees Club (RTPGPC) was officially established with 25 founding members dedicated to promoting and preserving the Great Pyrenees breed while serving the regional community.

The club quickly became active. On September 20, 2014, RTPGPC participated in its first public event during Responsible Dog Ownership Day in Raleigh, North Carolina. In April 2015, the club published its inaugural newsletter, further strengthening communication and engagement among members. Then, on April 11, 2017, the Great Pyrenees Club of America officially approved RTPGPC as an affiliated club—an important milestone in the club's history.

Today, RTPGPC continues to bring together Great Pyrenees owners, breeders, exhibitors, and admirers through educational programs, specialty events, community outreach, and a shared passion for this remarkable breed.
